The Australian skipper has taken 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.
The Australian selection chief the selector has declared that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's Ashes series.
Speculation had been growing that Cummins might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.
Previous updates from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on November 21 in the WACA.
The selector shared that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about his chances of taking part.
"We know that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations around that, aside from the physical problem, but additional elements," he commented.
"It's positive. We firmly believe that he's going to play a significant role. With luck starting in Perth. If not, we'll adjust."
Previous Setbacks
He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India recently after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.
He has a history of back injuries, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from three Australian summers in a limited period.
Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the Ashes.
He mentioned that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.
Contingency Plans
If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.
Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.
The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."
"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the initial game as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.
"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches in any case. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for a short period, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
